How CuroPDF Stays Free โ Our Honest Model
Every free product has a business model. Ours is transparent, user-first and doesn’t involve your documents. Here’s exactly how it works.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!โ CuroPDF is free. Not free-ish. Not free for the first 3 uses. Not free with watermarks. Genuinely, permanently, unconditionally free.
The honest question
Every time something is free on the internet, a reasonable person asks: what’s the catch? It’s a smart question. Many “free” PDF tools make money by:
- Adding watermarks you have to pay to remove
- Limiting you to 3 free uses then hitting a paywall
- Processing your documents on their servers and analysing the content
- Selling access to your data or usage patterns to advertisers
- Using a “freemium” bait-and-switch where the essential features are locked
We do none of those things. So the question remains: how do we keep the lights on?
Our honest model
Modest, non-targeted advertising
We display small, contextual adverts โ the type that shows a “PDF tools” ad on a PDF tools site. We never target ads based on your documents or personal data. Your files are never read for advertising purposes.
Optional Pro features (coming soon)
We plan to offer advanced features โ batch processing, priority support, custom branding โ for power users who want them. The core 22 tools will always remain free.
Honest partnerships
We may recommend complementary services (like certified e-signature providers) where they genuinely serve users better than our free tools. We disclose partnerships clearly.
Community support
Users who love CuroPDF can support us directly if they choose to. No pressure, no paywalls, no begging banners โ just an optional way to say thanks.
Why local processing matters for our model
Because our tools process files in your browser, we have no server costs per document processed. A tool that uploads every file to a server pays for storage, bandwidth, compute and security infrastructure for every user โ costs that have to be recouped somehow, usually from you.
Our architecture sidesteps this entirely. The processing happens on your CPU, in your browser tab. We serve the tool code once (a few hundred kilobytes) and that’s it. The economics of local processing let us offer these tools free without extracting value from your data.
What we will never do to stay free
| Practice | CuroPDF | Many competitors |
|---|---|---|
| Add watermarks to output | โ Never | โ Common |
| Upload your files to servers | โ Never | โ Standard practice |
| Analyse document content | โ Never possible | โ Some do |
| Require signup for basic tools | โ Never | โ Very common |
| Limit free uses per day | โ Never | โ Very common |
| Sell user data to advertisers | โ Never | โ Some do |
Our commitment
The 22 tools on CuroPDF are free today and will be free in five years. That’s not a marketing promise โ it’s a structural commitment baked into how we built the product. We can’t change our minds and start charging for uploads because we never had uploads. We can’t sell your document data because we never had your document data.
Privacy isn’t a policy on CuroPDF. It’s architecture.
๐ If you ever see us doing any of the things in the ‘Never’ column above, call us out publicly. We’ll fix it.
